FAQs About Tires

How do you feel about “studless” vs. “studded” snow tires? Which brands do you prefer or would you recommend?

It’s really your choice when it comes to studless vs. studded snow tires. That said, with the new technology in studless tires, they were equally as well as studded. Granted, some traditionalists swear by studded tires, and that is their choice. You should just know that studded tires are regulated by the state—they can go on November 1 and must be removed at the end of April, as they are detrimental to the surface of roads. For brands, I recommend the Bridgestone Blizzak tire—it’s a personal favorite of mine, and one I’ve relied on for 10-12 years. Other folks prefer Michelin, Continental, or Dunlop—it’s really all a matter of preference, as the brands are quite comparable in price, safety, and effectiveness in the winter months. Yes, it’s an investment, but worthwhile in bad weather!

In my household, we have both a front-wheel drive and a four-wheel drive. Would you recommend snow tires for both?

Yes. We recommend snow tires, or at least having four of the same type of tires so that they will all grip to the road uniformly. This creates a safer driving environment, for driver, passengers, and others on the road. While snow tires might feel like an investment initially, ultimately they prolong the life of your summer tires. And if you’re going to remain in New England, it just makes sense to have a good set of snow tires to weather the unpredictable winter months in a safe manner! Some folks might say that they are retired, don’t rely on their vehicle much to get around, etc., but I remind them that no matter what they are doing, snow tires are useful if a snowstorm blows in. After all, you don’t want to be trapped in your house!

When should I have my snow tires put on and when should I have them removed?

Again, studded tires are state regulated, so they go on November 1 and must be off at the end of April. Studless tires can go on whenever you feel comfortable doing so. If you plan to be driving in the snow quite a bit, get them on as soon as possible. Some people do wait till the last minute, of course, but we don’t recommend it!

How many of your customers use snow tires?

I would say about 50-60% choose to invest in/use snow tires.

How many tires do you have in stock?

We don't actually stock tires, but we will happily order whatever you need--the best tires for your vehicle at the best price! And your tires will be installed by trained, professional technicians, so you know you will leave Greenfield Auto with high-quality, safe, and well-installed snow tires.
